You know the expression "back to the drawing board"? Well, I desperately needed to step away from the drawing board in search of not only new goodies for my shop but for much needed inspiration. The Christmas season is clearly over and it is time for a new look for the new year. I never really change my look but I truly needed a spark of motivation. And this is how it began...

step one: go to bed early and set alarm for...gulp...6:00am
step two: put on my trusty old boots and jeans
step three: grab camera, cash and my favorite satchel
step four: find the nearest outdoor flea market
step five: happiness

You can take the girl out of West Virginia...but you can't take the West Virginia out of the girl...

I found just the right place! At the end of a long row of vendors sat a grey van, mounds of old wood and a charming character...my new friend Walt. He is nearly 80 years young and is as sweet as he is cute! And quite the story teller as well. I learned that every year Walt fishes his way from Georgia to Ohio and collects all sorts of wood along the way: driftwood, gnarly old branches, boards off boats and chunky logs whittled by beavers! He takes his haul back to his work shed in Florida and makes wonderful treasures.

His little trailer was just filled to the brim with the best collection of weathered old bits I've ever seen.

I couldn't live without a few of these great benches...

They went directly from the old drive-in to my shop.

And the hooks he makes from old wood and railroad spikes are nothing short of fabulous!

This one lasted 24 hours in the shop. I've already put in my request for a few more...I'm doing my best to keep my new friend busy.

I guess I have found not only my inspiration but I have also made a wonderful new friend. Sorry ladies...he's taken!!! The good news is that his lovely wife is an antiques dealer...what a great team!

Now it really is time to get back to the drawing board...

but that sure was fun!

Santa Stops in the Shop...

The Butterfly House

This place is enchanting...

The path opens to a wonderful butterfly bench...

...then you happen upon a sweet little gazebo.

Every detail is spectacular!

After a brief pause, the tour continues along the beautiful brick path...

Passing wonderful sculptural elements like this simple bird feeder with an aged copper roof.

The walk becomes an adventure as you cross tiny waterways that lead to majestic pools.

Every step is more like a shuffle as not to disturb the true residents of this most wonderful place!

And it is not just home to butterflies...

If you sit still long enough...you are bound to have a curious visitor stop by.

The blue blur next to my ear is a giant blue butterfly!

At rest they appear to have a dozen eyes gazing back to you...

Then she opens her wings...and she is dressed to impress!!!

Now this little guy is quite impressive too...

A trip to the Butterfly House made me think about countless hours in my garden. I would hope and hope to just catch the slightest glimpse of a fairy at dusk. I once thought for certain that I had. As an adult I could rationalize that it was just a butterfly...but why would I want to do that. It only took a moment once I walked in the door to be transported back in time. I am a little girl again...

Deep down inside I have to wonder if the fairies are tucked inside the garden of the conservatory just waiting for the magical hour to pop out and dance in the moonlight.

It was a wonderful day...

A Few from the Grounds

I have to admit that I was so excited to visit the Keys just to see all the Hemingway six toed kitties. While there we learned the origin...Hemingway was given a white six toed kitty, named Snowball, from a ship's captain. There are still descendants of Snowball on the grounds today.

As promised, here are a few more images from around the grounds. I found this old image and it is almost hard to believe how little things have changed...

The vegetation has matured...but the property looks just as it did many years ago...

There are influences from all around the world...including this fountain and the tiles surrounding the basin that are tucked in among the bamboo of the gardens.

Behind the buildings are small cat-sized replicas of the main house and guest house.

Look closely and you will see content little faces resting in the windows.

The grounds are lush and green with a sweet blend of petitte kitty homes, old iron garden chairs, bird baths and fountains. Natural perfection....

It was a fantastic day to visit such an historic treasure. Everything was even better than I had imagined...

and this was only the beginning of the adventure.

A Look into Hemingway's Home...

If ever there was a question as to whether or not I am a lucky girl...the answer is yes! I was so fortunate to be taken on a special surprise trip to the Keys for my birthday last month. Even though I live on an island in the Gulf...sometimes a change of scenery is still needed. What a treat to take a boat ride down to the Keys and spend the weekend with my sweetheart, Scott. It was not only relaxing...but it was also inspirational. This will be the first of several postings on the sights and wonders of the Keys that brought me great joy...and inspiration!

I was so taken by the simple, quiet elegance of the home. Even the understated bathrooms were adorned with small crystal chandeliers. The sunlight rooms were filled with a select few antiques. The gulf breezes filled the air...and Hemingway kitties were speckled throughout the grounds. Looking at the collection of works by Hemingway made it seem like he had just stepped out for a stroll. It was as though he just might peek in to see what all the fuss is about.

After browsing through my pictures it was obvious that the bones of the building intrigued me the most: from the doors to the windows and shutters, from the staircase to the detailed railings and rafters, from the built-in cabinets to the beautiful fireplaces. It is beautiful from front door to back.

Christmas in my little shop...

Looking forward to the Christmas holiday has been a bit of a challenge for me ever since I moved to Sanibel Island. It is beautiful, sunny and warm. Not a snowflake in sight. It just hasn't felt like Christmas. It has also been hard to focus on Christmas with client deadlines looming and photo shoots filling the days. But today something was different. I was finally able to take a moment and sit quietly in my shop. As the Christmas music filled the air, I looked at every little square inch of my shop and I realized that this is Christmas...my new Christmas. Seashells adorn the wreaths...sand dollars nestle in between mercury glass ornaments and a few paper mache churches on the trees...gilded birds and butterflies float through the parasols hanging from the ceiling...the tables, antique bed and cabinets are dressed in their finest vintage lace and blankets...and old ice skates and metal runner sleds are right at home, even though there is not a hint of ice or snow for miles. This is my new Christmas and my new life. I hope you enjoy a peek into Surroundings...all decorated for my new Christmas!

Sometimes it just takes a while to find your way. It has taken me a few years. For the first time this feels like home. Happiness has a great deal to do with it...and I am happy. I wish the very same for everyone this holiday season!

Desk Project

I have never shied away from a project and here is my latest...

I found this great old claw foot desk for a mere $40 and decided I must have it! Only problem...

It was wobbly at best...and in pieces.

First things first...get rid of the wobble.

Thank goodness for wood glue...

...and long clamps!

Next was to assemble the top like a puzzle and make sure that it was not missing any boards.

Then the sander did over-time. The delicate claw feet had to be done by hand.

Now it was time to stain the base and pen drawer.

The desk is not terribly heavy but it is large and cumbersome for one (me). So I decided to carry it up to its new home prior to assembling the top.

Once the top was all back together, safe and secure, it was time to stain the top to match the base.

A protective coat (or four!) of polyurethane was all that was needed to finish my project.

Voila! My new desk in its new home. So pleased!!!

I could not have done it without years of watching my dad refinish furniture. Normally I am the first to paint an old piece of furniture white and call it a day. But not this time. This grand old boy deserved to be brought back to his original glory.

Thanks Dad for the lessons, encouragement and tips along the way!!!

Miranda at her finest...

It was so rewarding to finally be able to enjoy all the hard work that led up to the day of the photo shoot...

The flowers were perfection....

...and the sun was streaming in through the sparkling windows.

But something was missing...

I think my sweet old girl, Miranda, was feeling a bit left out.

She wanted to get back to her favorite spot...

Or else she just wanted a little of the spot light.

Now that is a perfect picture!

I love my sweet little girl.

Zeeryp Cottage Before & After

Here is the next design renovation project on the grounds of the Island Inn on Sanibel...Zeeryp Cottage.

The design for Zeeryp Cottage came very effortlessly. The space had great bones...but it was in desperate need of some TLC. For those of you who have followed my design work over the years...and may I say "thank-you" for all the support and encouragement...you know that my personal style is a pale wash of white and cream blended with antiques used in a modern way.

This cottage called to me on such a personal level. As with any project, budget was a concern. It was determined early on that I would need to use as many of the existing resources that the property had to offer. Back in the planning stages of this project, I went through years of collected mirrors, prints and lamps that were tucked away in storage. I found a series of old black and white bird photographs that were taken years ago here on the island by one of the shareholders of the Island Inn...Mr. Harold Lee.

Those photographs were the inspiration for the design of Zeeryp Cottage...Enjoy!

Walking out of this cottage for the last time tugged on my heart strings a bit. The space encompasses all the things that bring me so much joy on such a personal level...the beach, the sea air, the birds, the old black and white photography, the architecture and of course...the color palette.

Oh well...off to the next project!

A Tour of Starkey Lodge...Before & After

Designing hotel rooms may not be the most creative challenge but it can be rewarding. The next phase of the renovations at the Island Inn include the rooms of Starkey Lodge...

Inspiration for this old Florida beach front lodge can be found in our most prized treasure...the junonia.

This rare beauty can be found on our shell covered beaches...that is if you are a very lucky sheller!

I have never been so blessed as to find one, but I do have my jar filled with tiny junonia crumbs that I have found over the years.

The shell has a sleek slender shape and the creamy white field is peppered with rich brown spots. So simple, so elegant, so Sanibel!

The brown and white shell of the junonia was the starting point for the design...the island surroundings supplied the rest.

The rooms of Starkey Lodge...

What a difference paint can make...

This charming lodge on the grounds of the Island Inn truly represents old Florida style. Starkey Lodge now has an updated look that enhances the charm and history of its past.

A Tour of Matthews Cottage...Before & After

Here is the next completed design project on the grounds of the Island Inn on Sanibel Island...

MATTHEWS COTTAGE

In 1885, the Matthews family came to Sanibel Island and built a beautiful beach front home. Their home quickly became the destination for friends and family who came to visit the Matthews and the little island paradise that is Sanibel. Soon the homestead grew into a charming boarding house...that proudly stands today as the historic Island Inn. The cottage you are about to tour is the old Matthew's homestead. I am so honored to have had the privilege of creating the design for this incredible historic cottage.

The inspiration for the renovation of this beautiful old cottage is this sunset picture taken not far from the front door. Sunsets on Sanibel are spectacular. The sun slowly slips down into the Gulf of Mexico and the distant clouds burst into the most incredible palette of colors. Each little seashell sparkles in the evening light and it truly is like...well...magic.

Phister Cottage still holds onto its full rich past, but now it has the updated decor that she truly deserves. It can be a challenge to maintain the history and relevance of a space while offering a fresh new appeal...especially in a commercial installation. The idea was merely to enhance the charm that this cottage has owned for years.

Phister Cottage is officially re-opened to the public. Now you can stop daydreaming about a storybook vacation and make plans to visit Sanibel Island and stay in this wonderful cottage.

Taking a space from a dream to reality...that's my job!

Where have I been hiding...?

It has been awhile since I have sat down to write...or do much of anything else but run around like a design lunatic. I have been working away on the remodeling/renovation of The Island Inn. It is the oldest inn on Sanibel Island and I have had the privilege to design the inn's new look. The day-to-day operation and facilitation has been quite a challenge but the results are totally worth the time invested. After revisiting my previous blog post it is clear to see the natural inspiration that influenced this design...

This is the first of many cottages to see. Each one is different and each one exhibits a unique design influence...all found right here on our wonderful little island.

This is Spoonbill Cottage and it will be the first of several to be featured in this blog.

As I was making one of many trips to my truck at the end of the day today, I looked down...no more than two feet from my tire was an inquisitive little visitor. She sat and watched me for awhile...then I sat and watched her for awhile. Just over the grasses is the sandy shore of the Gulf of Mexico. After weeks of working only feet from the water I realized that I had not even one time sat and watched the sun set over the Gulf or taken five minutes to walk the 25 feet to the water's edge. Not tonight. I followed my little friend through the grass and down to the beach where I watched the pelicans soaring overhead.

This is why I am here and this is my inspiration.

A true gift from God.

I just needed a little nudge from a little friend...telling me that it's okay to slow down a take a look around. Appreciate the world around me and begin my search for new inspiration for the next project.

What a wonderful and much needed ending to a chaotic and stressful week.

I have rediscovered my joy and found peace.

Sunshine and Succulents

We are in the heart of summer and I am really missing my gardens of the North. I have been living on Sanibel Island for three years now and am learning to embrace an entirely new way of gardening.

I have tried to grow the plants and flowers that I love with little success. So it's time to implement my new approach...

Find a plant that is happy in the environment where you live and go for it with gusto.

So I am not going to fight it and hope for mounds of brilliant blue hydrangeas any longer.

It's time to bring on the succulents.

There is no shortage of sun or heat on this little island...

...and they look beautiful tucked into all sorts of special nooks and crannies.

Finding creative ways to grow succulents has made me miss my old flower gardens a little less.

Now I see how these sun loving beauties have influenced me in so many ways. Years ago I even did a segment for NBC's Later Today Show called...

Adding a soft touch to rock gardens with succulents.

And for those who shy away from their inner green thumb...I carry wonderful artificial succulents in my shop.

It's almost hard to believe that these are not real...

Even their shape seems to appear everywhere now...

Design has many influences, most of mine do come from nature.

I will never shy away from a gardening challenge. Being in the dirt is truly my happy place. How does the saying go...?

"Grow where you are planted."

I'm doing my best.

Create Special Moments Daily...

Any moment of any day can become a special occasion...

Brunch carries a certain sophistication by definition. Maintain the sophistication...while keeping it simple.

Pancakes and eggs...

for Royalty or everyday.

Keep the menu simple and the decor elegant.

Farm fresh eggs...

Hydrangeas, china, linens and lace...

Soft Boiled Eggs

Ingredients:
Eggs
Water
Salt

Directions:

1. Place eggs into saucepan. Add enough water to cover completely. Sprinkle a pinch of salt into the water, and bring water to a boil. Medium eggs will need about three minutes of boiling time and large to extra-large eggs will need about four to five minutes.

2. Remove the eggs immediately, and serve in egg cups.

A correctly cooked soft boiled egg will have a firm, but not rubbery, white and a runny to soft yellow. Soft boiled eggs are best served in egg cups. Traditionally the small side of the egg is facing down. Once the egg is placed into the egg cup, simply cut off the top third of the egg with egg scissors or carefully use a sharp knife. Serve with a toasted English muffin.

Fluffy Home-Style Pancakes

Ingredients:
3/4 cup milk
2 tablespoons white vinegar
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons white sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg
2 tablespoons butter, melted
cooking spray

Directions:

1. Combine milk with vinegar in a medium bowl and set aside for 5 minutes to "sour".

2. Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Whisk egg and butter into "soured" milk. Pour the flour mixture into the wet ingredients and whisk until lumps are gone.

3. Heat a large skillet over medium heat, and coat with cooking spray. Pour 1/4 cupfuls of batter onto the skillet, and cook until bubbles appear on the surface. Flip with a spatula, and cook until browned on the other side.

Stack pancakes warm, sprinkle with a touch of cinnamon and powdered sugar. Serve immediately with fresh room temperature butter and warm maple syrup.

Remembering...

I am so grateful to have been able to spend a wonderful holiday weekend with both of my families and our friends. I can't help but think about the reason we were able to spend this time together...

Memorial Day

It seems that the traditional observances of Memorial Day have faded over the years. It is unfortunate that many of us have forgotten the history of Memorial Day. From decorating grave sites…to standing along flag strewn streets as marching bands and the Color Guard pass by…to proudly wearing a red poppy…to taking a simple moment of silence to honor all those amazing men and women who have selflessly given their time, service and lives so that we may have a Memorial Day to freely celebrate.

I too have lost sight of the incredible weight that this day carries. As I look back through pictures of this past weekend with my family and friends, I am struck by one particular image. I stood at the base of an old light house, straining to see my sister and nephew looking back at me. I didn’t catch their image in the camera’s lens…but I was blessed to have captured a beautiful picture to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day.

The photo prompted me to take a deeper look at the history of Memorial Day. It is my pleasure to share a few highlights with you…

Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. It is a special day of remembrance for all those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the true birthplace of Memorial Day.

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5th 1868 by General John Logan, the national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. It was first observed on May 30th 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War, as early as 1862.

The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the northern states. The South refused to acknowledge the historic day. Instead they chose to honor their dead on separate days until after World War I. At this time the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring all Americans who died fighting in any war.

It is not important who was the very first to celebrate the day...or even where. What is important is that Memorial Day was in fact established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation...it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.

In 1915 Moina Michael wrote:

We cherish too, the Poppy red

That grows on fields where valor led,

It seems to signal to the skies

That blood of heroes never dies

She then conceived the idea to wear red poppies on Memorial Day in honor of those who died serving the nation during war. She was the first to wear one, and sold poppies to her friends and co-workers with the money going to benefit servicemen in need.

Later, Madam Guerin from France was visiting the United States and learned of this new custom started by Ms. Michael and when she returned to France, made artificial red poppies to raise money for war orphaned children and widowed women. In 1921, the Franco-American Children's League sold poppies nationally to benefit war orphans of France and Belgium. The League disbanded a year later and Madam Guerin approached the VFW for help. Shortly before Memorial Day in 1922 the VFW became the first veterans' organization to sell poppies nationally. Two years later their “Buddy” Poppy Program was selling artificial poppies made by disabled veterans.

In 1948 the US Post Office honored Ms. Michael for her role in founding the National Poppy movement by issuing a red 3 cent postage stamp with her likeness on it.

One tradition that is seldom seen is the display of a "service flag" or "service banner". It is the unofficial banner that family members of service men and women in harm's way can display. The flag or banner (as seen above) has a white field with a red border and a central blue star for each family member in active duty. A gold star (with a blue edge) represents a family member that died during service. The flag dates back to the early 1900’s. In 1917 it was read into the Congressional Record that the Mayor of Cleveland, the Chamber of Commerce and the Governor of Ohio officially adopted this service flag. “The world should know of those who give so much for liberty. The dearest thing in all the world to a father and mother — their children.”

I was very lucky to have spent this past Memorial Day weekend in Chagrin Falls, Ohio with both the Graham and Craig families. We celebrated a cousin's wedding...honored my parents' 46th wedding anniversay...reminisced at Scott's High School Reunion...ate way too much at the Taste of Chagrin...watched all the kids scramble for candy at the Blossom Time Parade...and spent lots of time laughing and simply enjoying our time together at a big family cook-out. I am blessed in many ways, surrounded by family...traditions both old and new...and lots of love.

However you may chose to celebrate Memorial Day, it is important to remember those who served and died for all of us. Wave a flag at a parade, decorate the grave of a fallen soldier, wear a poppy on your lapel or say a prayer of thanks before your picnic.

Always remember and never forget.

God bless the men and women of the United States Armed Forces...May He bring peace and comfort to the families who have suffered the greatest loss.

Once again I realize that I am a very lucky girl! Upon taking an afternoon stroll I stumbled on an unexpected treasure...

The French Bee

Walking into this shop literally took my breath away. Nestled into an elegant shopping district in Keirland Commons sits this wonderland for the senses. The French Bee is the epitome of fantastic fantasy floral design for every home. All the arrangements are designed and arranged by the very talented and creative owner Michael Hansen.

If you are in Arizona you must visit one of their lovely locations...

St. Patrick's Day

As day after day passes us by, it is so easy to get caught up in the worries that continue to fill our lives. This week we celebrated St. Patrick's Day. It would have been easy to chalk it up as any other busy day in an already hectic world. However, for my family this day has cause to pause. I am blessed and honored to share in the Irish heritage thanks to my Irish Grandmother Anna Julia McMunn. Grandma was Irish to the core...and she even passed away on St. Patrick's Day. She was very creative and I believe she would have loved my little shop.

Tea Party Favors

Are you going to host a tea party or a ladies luncheon and need a special favor for your guests?

Here is an idea I would like to share. I can't think of a more lovely way to recycle!

What you will need...

misc. vintage tea cups

misc. antique silver spoons

misc. vintage linen napkins

tea bags

cellophane corsage bags

plastic lollipop sleeves

organza jewelry sized bags

narrow ribbon of your choice

packing material: crinkle, excelsior or shredded paper

scissors

Note: Hit the thrift shops for the vintage items and a craft store for the packaging materials.

First...

Place a small amount of shredded tissue in the bottom of a cellophane bag. Create a "nest" and nestle the tea cup upright in the bottom of the bag.

Next...

Place a neatly folded napkin in the tea cup.

Next...

Take a tea bag and place it into a plastic lollipop sleeve leaving the string and tag free.

Next...

Tuck the tea bag and a silver spoon into an organza bag. Be sure to leave the handle of the spoon and the tag of the tea bag out. Pull the ribbon of the bag tight and secure with a single knot.

Next...

Tightly twist the cellophane bag (holding the tea cup and napkin) closed and secure with ribbon. Using the extra ribbon, tie the spoon and tea bag onto the cellophane bag.

Lastly...

Cut excess cellophane to make the final presentation neat and tidy. As an extra little touch you can hot glue a small vintage button onto the tea bag label!

Place one of the pretty packages on each place setting for your guests. Adding a card or tag will allow you to use the gift as a place setting marker on the table or you can simply use the space to write a special note.

Find a plain note card, gift tag or make your own. The vintage tea advertisement below is a great image to use as a label...

On the back of the card you could write someting sweet like...

Thank you for spending the afternoon with me...

I think you're as special as can be,

So I hope you will enjoy this gift of tea!

Even though my palette is always a wash of white and cream...it is impossible to hide the true colors of romance. Touches of red pepper the shop and warm the senses as well as the soul!

I love vintage linens and it is a joy to showcase these cheerful French classics.

Worn, loved and treasured...

and they have the character to prove it.

From torn linens to elegant china...it all blends together seamlessly.

A few scraps of upholstery fabric, a yard or two of grosgrain ribbon, and a vintage velvet rose...

Voila...romance!

...And a touch of country gingham goes a long way. This tufted heart garland is as whimsical as it is charming.

Of course no display in my shop is complete without the addition of a nest..every season is the reason for a new beginning...hence the nest!

Inspiration comes from everywhere. It can come from the most obscure places or it can be something we see every single day. I am so blessed to have the Gulf of Mexico at the end of my street...now that's inspiration!

The shelling has been spectacular this winter!!! And needless to say...I have been spending less time working and more time with the sand between my toes. But now it is time to get back to the drawing board and I have taken my inspiration with me once again...

Even though my shop maintains a very defined look comprised of white vintage lovely feminine wares...my design work spans a multitude of styles. No matter how traditional or modern...residential or commercial...the project may be I always refer to nature and history for my design inspiration.

Texture, color, form...it all comes from the past. Look to the familiar when attempting to create the extraordinary. I have collected many beautiful shells and shaken the sand from my shoes. It's time to officially get back to the drawing board!

Yummy Fun in the Kitchen

Well this blog is starting to make me look like a pastry chef...truth be told, I am barely a cook. But my love of decorating always takes over...even in the kitchen! I thought I would share my favorite super simple spice cake recipe that I made this holiday season...

Here is what you will need...

boxed spice cake mix

3 eggs

1 1/4 cups apple sauce

1/3 cup vegetable oil

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp vanilla extract

1/2 tsp ground ginger

1/2 tsp nutmeg

First, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Next, grease and flour a bundt pan. Combine all ingredients above in a large bowl...then, using an electric mixer, mix on medium speed for 2 minutes. Pour the batter into the greased and floured bundt pan and place on the center rack in your oven. Bake for 40 minutes... Allow the cake to cool 5 minutes before removing from the pan. Be patient and allow the cake to cool completely before decorating!

Now the fun begins! What you will need for decorating...

30 ginger snap cookies

12 oz container of cream cheese frosting

1 can green cupcake frosting with decorating tips

1 can red cupcake frosting with decorating tips

green crystal sugar

clear sugared glitter flakes

Grind gingersnaps in a food processor and set aside. Frost entire cake with the white cream cheese frosting. Gently pat the ground gingersnaps into the sides of the frosted cake. Next, attach the leaf tip to the can of green frosting. Cover the entire top of the cake with tiny green leaves. Be sure to practice on a piece of waxed paper. Start the leaves in the center of the cake and work your way around and around until the top of the cake is covered and looks like a wreath! Now sprinkle the green sugar lightly over the leaves. Using the drawing tip on the can of red frosting, randomly make small dots to resemble berries on the wreath. For a wonderful finishing touch, sprinkle clear sugar flakes over the entire cake...it will glisten and shine in the soft candlelight. I like to think of it as fairy dust...!

I love to bake...I love to decorate...but most of all...I love sharing a piece of cake and a cold glass of milk with the people I love! I would like to send a special thanks to the Craig Family...especially Cooper...for helping me finish the entire cake! I hope you will be inspired to create something beautiful...and yummy!

I think I may have found a holiday tradition that is the culmination of all the things that bring me joy...

baking, decorating, crafting, collecting, and gardening...!

One late evening...as visions of sugar plums danced in my head...it came to me like a magical dream! I flipped on the lights, wrapped up in my robe and ran to the kitchen. Everything I needed for my creation came dancing out of the pantry...

cereal

hard candy

powdered sugar

gingerbread mix...

pretzel rods
graham crackers
frosting
rice crispies
marshmallows...

...and lots and lots of love

This is the recipe for my winter sweet creations...and the result is a great deal of joy! Vintage cake stands elevate the lovely winter fairy houses and give them a stage on which to shine. Tiny candles illuminate the candied stained glass windows from within adding a warm delicate glow. Domesticity is an honorable art. Now it's time for you to dig through your pantry and bring your vision of sugar plums to life too!

I would like to add a personal note and send a very special thanks to the dearest man alive for creating this awesome experience. What a wonderful weekend full of inspiration and beauty! This Halloween weekend began with a walk through the streets of downtown Sarasota enjoying amazing chalk art and artists alike then on to the experience of discovering magical treasure filled shops. The days were blessed with great times and great food and made even more special by sharing it with friends and family. The weekend was called to a close with a perfect sunset over the serene gulf waters. What more could a girl ask for...?

Summer is here in all its glory. With June coming to an end it can only mean one thing...it's time to celebrate our nation! Plus it's another reason to decorate...Cheers!

I love the 4th of July...and I love decorating my home and shop for every changing season and holiday. Sometimes it can be hard to work a very traditional color palette of red, white and blue into your existing color scheme. Here are a few ideas to get you started...

This area of the shop is primarily robin's egg blue, pale yellow and touches of soft pink. So how does it become center stage for a festive 4th display...

Simply add pieces that will complement your decor yet invite the spirit of the holiday...add a collection of mix-and-match red transferware...

Look for ways and places to repeat your color scheme and new holiday colors...

Don't lose your own personal style when decorating...just find creative and innovative ways to add a punch of the holiday spirit!

Well, I have a house and shop to decorate so I best get to work...and I can't wait! Take time to play house this week. Bring out pretty white linens, fill classic Coke bottles with miniature flags, fill a bowl with shiny red apples and have fun. Be filled with the season and show how much you love Miss Liberty!

Design Inspiration

I live in a creative world and am so blessed to do so. By trade I am an interior designer. I originally opened my business strictly offering design consultation. Quickly my business transformed into a retail boutique. It has been 15 years now and even though both halves of my career are surrounded by creativity, they are so very different. For the most part, my design work is comprised of commercial installations. The aesthetic is quite contemporary yet always reflects my heart and soul. As I gather fabric and paint swatches I can see more than the project at hand. Even as I sit at my drafting table today, whether I am aware of it or not, my inspiration is obvious...

The job before me is to design a contemporary professional building. It is a complete remodel and the clean, modern design must portray the technology of today and the direction the company is going. Yet it must reflect on the company's incredible history. The materials are natural and the lines are sleek. The end result...classically modern design.

The design takes shape without a second thought to my inspiration. Then I see my palette clearly. It is not my own but a classic color scheme directly from Mother Nature herself...

It is ironic that I am designing a very contemporary environment yet my inspiration is as classically natural as can be. It has been a joy to create and develop this design and now I can't wait to see it come to life...or should I say "hatch".

Asian Influence...

Design trends tend to come and go, but the ones with true staying power are derived from history. By adding pieces to your decor that have historical significance you will be adding depth, character and a true sense of relevance. There is a way to blend historical and classic design elements into your own personal style. As for me, I have always been drawn to an Asian inspired design aesthetic. The following are examples of how these elements have been integrated into my home, shop and personal style...

Asian design has been based on tranquility, peace and harmony for centuries. I find that simple yet beautiful organization creates a sense of peace in my home. By organizing clutter, even simple bars of soap and votive candles take on an elegance and charm.

Another key to Asian design is the use of bold dramatic color like gold, red and black. My personal style is, for the most part, void of color. However, this drama can be created by the bold use of black as a stark contrast to white.

The design influence can be extremely subtle yet still make a huge impact on the space.

Natural materials are heavily utilized in Asian design. The pieces below were made from balsa wood and twine. When manipulated in a very delicate manner, they create beautiful but simple works of art. It reminds me of the intricate and delicate paper art of origami.

Another key practice in Asian design is the use of multi-purpose furnishings. Space was very limited in many Asian homes so furnishings had to be practical and functional. Beautiful trunks and cabinets with individual drawers and compartments were at a premium for storage.

Texture is also a key element of design. Natural wood intricately carved created a pictorial of historical significance. Not only were the pieces beautiful, they were recording history through visual story telling. An incredible level of craftsmanship that has endured for centuries.

Even a simple doll can be transformed into a piece of art in a very sophisticated fashion.

Utilitarian objects like rice paper parasols can also be transformed into elements of design. They are simple and elegant while they play into another element of Asian decor...light. The filtering of natural light was a playful art that could be seen in lanterns, screens, fans and of course...parasols

To me, there are no rules when it comes to design. Mixing items you love is the perfect recipe for a beautiful, eclectic home. Be creative, playful and most of all...love your surroundings.

oddities...

My design aesthetic has truly grown over the years as I grow and have the opportunity to experience more and more wonderful things. I used to have a completely white canvas with every piece of furniture coated in shades of white. No wood ever saw the light of day. Over the last few years I have begun to embrace not just wood, but many other materials in many new ways. I have also learned to appreciate rich black, deep charcoal and warm shades of chocolate brown. The transformation has developed with each new oddity that finds its way into my home. My inspiration comes from old slate chalkboards, delicate bird's nests, pitted old metal in any form, hard working utilitarian baskets, and the list goes on...and on. Of course I still have an ongoing love affair of all things white and lovely...but now I can appreciate how dramatic a charcoal wall can offset a collection of Ironstone...or how a heavily carved Indonesian door can be a beautiful backdrop for a simple white hydrangea.

For the love of the sea...

I truly love living on a little island in the Gulf of Mexico. It is a blessing to be a mere walk away from the shore. The beauty that surrounds me makes me feel like I am home. From the first time I visited the shore as a little girl, I couldn't help but to fill my pockets with shells and tuck them in my suitcase. I have always had shells around me, even living in the hills of West Virginia. Now that I am a grown up little girl I feel as though this is where my inspiration for an entire career was formed. I am known as a designer by my affinity for a muted monochromatic palette...my appreciation for antiquity...and for my love affair with all things naturally beautiful. It is no mistake that I landed on the shores of Sanibel Island. Even though sea shells grace every little spot in my home, I can't help but fill my pockets as I walk along the shore. I have tried to integrate the same serene palette, simple elegance and love of all things natural into my shop. Here are a few images from inside Surroundings...
